The celebration began with a solemn Thanksgiving Mass presided over by Most Rev. Peter K. Atuahene, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Goaso, and concelebrated by Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Adu Boateng, Assistant Cathedral Administrator.
The school was established in September 2000 by Bishop Atuahene as part of his vision to provide holistic Catholic education to the children of the newly created Goaso Diocese.
Named in memory of his late German benefactor, Henry Hueging, the school started with just 153 pupils and eight staff members in two classrooms at the Cathedral. Since 2007, it has been managed by the Sisters of the Religious of the Virgin Mary (RVM), with S. Maria Xavariana Betty Japung, RVM, as the first RVM headmistress.
Now a shining example of excellence under the motto Primus Inter Pares (First Among Equals), the school has grown remarkably. It currently boasts 20 classrooms, a solar-powered ICT laboratory (thanks to the family of the late Rev. Deacon Winfried Stadtfeld, Germany, through Rev. Fr. Joseph Aduse-Poku), two school buses, and a student population of 731. The staff strength stands at 47, made up of 36 teachers and 11 non-teaching staff.
Following the Mass, the celebration continued with speeches and performances. The Headmistress, Sis. Rosemary Dadi, gave a stirring account of the school’s journey over the past 25 years. This was followed by a keynote lecture by Mr. William Baafi, the Ahafo Regional Manager of Catholic Schools, on the theme: “Making a Difference in the Learner in This Modern Generation and the Role of Stakeholders.” He emphasized the collective responsibility of stakeholders in shaping the modern learner for a better future.
The launch was graced by a cross-section of stakeholders whose contributions have sustained the school’s mission over the years. These included teaching and non-teaching staff, current students and their parents, old students (alumni), Mr. William Baafi (Regional Manager of Ahafo Catholic Schools), parishioners of the Cathedral Church, members of the RVM Congregation, and friends and benefactors of the school.
The program also featured the unveiling of the official anniversary logo by Bishop Atuahene, musical performances by the school choir, and vibrant choreography by the students, celebrating the richness of Ghanaian heritage.
Since presenting its first batch of BECE candidates in 2008, Henry Hueging Memorial School has graduated 496 learners with a strong academic record. Though a Catholic school, only 16% of its student population are Catholics, a testament to its inclusivity and commitment to serving the wider community.
As the school celebrates its Silver Jubilee, coinciding with the Universal Church’s Jubilee Year, prayers are being raised for continued growth and the fulfillment of the founder’s vision: to form upright, intelligent, and responsible citizens for Church and society.
