The Roman Catholic Diocese of Goaso commemorated the World Day of the Sick on Thursday, 19th March 2026, with a Holy Mass at the St. John of God Hospital, followed by the unveiling of a new block for the St. John of God Orthopedic School.
The Mass was presided over by Most Rev. Peter Kwaku Atuahene, assisted by several priests including chaplains of various Catholic health facilities. Present were the MCE, Hon. Pious Opoku, Nananom, and representatives of sister health institutions in the diocese and other Health stakeholders.
Preaching on the theme centered on the compassion of the Samaritan — loving by bearing the pain of others — Bishop Atuahene called on the faithful to embody authentic Christian compassion. He emphasized that true love goes beyond sympathy to active solidarity with those who suffer. “We are called not only to see pain,” he said, “but to enter into it and become instruments of healing.”
The Bishop also commended health workers and caregivers for their tireless and sacrificial service, describing them as visible signs of Christ’s healing presence in the world today.
The MCE highlighted some intervention by the government and plegde more support to the hospital and the beyond.
The Diocesan Director of Health Services, Mr. Michael Ayamga, commended the Diocese and its partners for their sustained investment in healthcare and education, and reiterated the need for continued support to sustain such impactful initiatives.He further urged the health workers to emulate the compassion fo the Samaritan and sholud extend not only to patients but their fellow workers as well.
In her address, Hospital Manager, Sr. Faustina Anakwa announced that the hospital has been ranked the best in emergency services in the region, while appealing for continued support.
The celebration ended with the commissioning of the new block for the Orthopedic School, reaffirming the Church’s commitment to holistic care and inclusive education.
