Year of Establishment
St. John of God Hospital was established as a Maternity Home in 1953 with three Staff. The Traditional Council appealed to the Catholic Church to take up the running of the facility and Brother John Verbert, a Dutchman, was appointed to manage the facility. Later, Dr. Magdalene, the first Dutch Medical Officer, was assigned to the facility by the Catholic Church. She was later joined by the husband, also a Medical Practitioner who became the Medical Officer in-charge.
The Catholic Diocese of Kumasi in collaboration with the Dutch Missionaries fully managed the facility and transformed it into a Hospital in 1955 with Dr. Adcock and his wife Dr. Magdalene at post.
Duayaw-Nkwanta is the District Capital for the Tano North District of the Brong –Ahafo Region. The District has an estimated population of 74,775. It is bounded in the North West by Sunyani Municipality, South West by Asutifi, to the South by Tano South and to the North by Offinso district.

Management and Administration:
The hospital has a Management Team made up of the Administrator, Medical Director, Nursing Administrator (Matron) and the Chaplain that meets monthly. Heads of Departments also meet once in every quarter. Staff durbars are also held once a quarter. Emergency meetings are held when the need arises.
The institution also has procurement and quality assurance committees. Staff are prepared for Easter and Christmas by having a day of recollection each time.

Challenges: The following are some of the challenges facing the Diocesan Institution:
Shortage of staff eg. Orthopaedic Surgeon, Physiotherapist, Rehabilitation Doctor, Dispensing Technicians, etc.

Streamlining client satisfaction survey for each year.
Preventive: Ante-natal; Maternal and Child Health; Family Planning; Nutrition, Health Education, School Health, Supervision and retraining of village health workers in level A and B facilities in the district.
Curative: Out-patient services with 24 hour Emergency Service, In-patient Services in four wards, i.e. a Maternity, General Surgery, Paediatrics, Internal Medicine and Specialised Orthopaedic and rehabilitation services. The X-ray and Ultrasound services are also provided.
Health Insurance Scheme
St. John of God Hospital has played its role as a major player and service provider in the NHIS since its inception.
The advent of the NHIS created a steady growth in OPD attendance in three consecutive years of 2006, 2007 and 2008, a growth rate of 10.8%.
However, the growth trend began to fall in 2009 by 2.2% due to the significant drop of Non-insured patients. It could also be due to the quality health care given by the service providers, which stabilized OPD attendance in 2008.

The facility which started with only three staff can now boast of 203 staff at post, but has now assumed the status of a District Hospital.

Regional Award: St. John of God Hospital won a Regional Health Service Award for being the second best well – managed Hospital in the region.
Peer Review: The Diocesan Health Directorate in conjunction with the Management of St. John of God hospital voluntarily offered the facility for the first Peer Review Process (Exercise). It obtained high ratings in the assessed areas, especially in Sanitation and Environment, Infection Control, Emergency Preparedness etc.
The hospital had the approval from the Ministry of Health to begin a two year certificate programme in Physiotherapy Assistant and Orthotic Training. It took off in October, 2009 with 37 candidates.
Modern Mortuary facility was completed and commissioned in 2009.
